Current Status and Gaps in Essential Technology, Equipment and Material for Implementing CO2 Saline Aquifer Storage Projects in China

Organisation: Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Objectives

The aim of this activity is to investigate the current status and to identify the gaps in technology, equipment and material (TEM) required for implementing CO2 saline aquifer storage projects in China. The capture and transport of COis not part of this study.

Activity Description

  • Task 1: To construct a systematic procedure for implementing COsaline aquifer storage projects. The study will review existing projects in China and overseas, as well as consulting with experts. It will take into account key equipment and services.
  • Task 2: To create an inventory (with information on main specification and performance) of the essential TEM needed in the procedure identified in Task 1.
  • Task 3: To obtain a list of currently available TEM (with the specification, performance, and supplier details). This information will be compiled through site visits, phone inquiry and internet research.
  • Task 4: To determine the level of TEM requirements, by reviewing the regulations and guidelines of existing projects, and by consulting with experts.
  • Task 5: To present the current status and gaps in technology needed for implementing COsaline aquifer storage projects in China.
  • Task 6: To make recommendations on R&D policy and project planning for COsaline aquifer storage technology, based on the findings of Task 5.

Expected Outcome

  • Create an inventory (with main specification and performance) of the essential TEM required for storing COin saline aquifers.
  • Present the current status and gaps in technology needed for implementing CO2 saline aquifer storage projects in China.
  • Make recommendations on R&D and project planning for CO2 saline aquifer storage technology.
